There is an understandable amount of uncertainty right now for employers following Labour’s landslide win in last week’s General Election. Under Sir Keir Starmer’s lead, the Labour party are set to introduce some drastic changes under their ‘make work pay’ agenda.
Whilst there is no doubt that significant changes are heading our way, there will be no immediate changes to employment legislation, but with so many click bait articles currently doing the rounds, we thought it would be helpful to bring some perspective to the situation.
According to Labour’s plans, they will bring forward the majority of their 60 proposed changes to boost employment rights within 100 days of taking office. This means that until October, we won’t know exactly what the new laws will entail and even then, they will need to be given Royal Ascent before they become effective. It’s therefore reasonable to assume that the new legislation will not take effect until the end of 2024 / early 2025.
If you are already a HR client of ours, we will update you as and when we know more and will ensure that your employee handbooks, policies and contracts of employment documents are updated accordingly.
