Spooky Tales
As we head into the spookiest time of the year, we wanted to step away from standard policy updates and share a few real-life HR horror stories from the wider corporate world.

While these tales might sound like the plot of a bad movie, they are cautionary reminders of how quickly things can unravel when workplace policies, documentation, and compliance are left out in the cold.
Nightmare 1: The Email Blast from Hell
An employer was recently left horrified after an employee attempting to send an intimate, personal photo to their spouse accidentally hit reply-all, Sending it to their entire department instead. Because the company lacked a clear Electronic Communications and IT Policy, handling the ensuing fallout, hostile work environment claims, and disciplinary actions became a legal minefield.
The Lesson: Having a clear policy outlining explicit expectations for the use of company systems and email accounts is your shield when boundaries are crossed.
Nightmare 2: The Double Identity
A business hired what they thought was a highly qualified remote software developer. A few weeks in, management noticed that the employee’s skill level varied wildly day by day—almost as if they were two completely different people. After an internal investigation, it was discovered that identical twins were sharing the single full-time role and taking turns logging on to work.
The Lesson: Robust remote on-boarding practices, mandatory video check-ins, and secure multi-factor authentication are critical to protecting your business from identity fraud.
Nightmare 3: The Ghost Who Sued
An employee requested to work from home indefinitely, citing personal preferences, and completely stopped coming into the workplace. Management let it slide for months without addressing it, establishing a paper trail, or asking for any context. When the company finally tried to enforce office attendance, the employee filed a discrimination claim based on an undocumented health issue. Because the company had zero paperwork tracking the absence or the requests, they had no defence to stand on.
The Lesson: In the tribunal world, poor paperwork has a nasty habit of rising from the grave to haunt you. Document every request, absence, and formal interaction immediately.
