The compliance behind the shop floor, kept consistent across every store.

A slip in a wet entrance. A lone worker locking up after a late shift. Abuse and aggression aimed at staff on the tills. A seasonal surge that doubles your headcount overnight, and a store transfer that brings TUPE with it. Retail spreads the same risks across dozens of sites, and keeping every one of them consistent is the real challenge. Spectra handles the lot from one place, with a named consultant who's stood on a shop floor and in a delivery yard, not just read about them.

WHERE RETAILERS CALL US

The risks don't stay behind one till, or in one store.

Most enquiries start with one of these. The earlier we're in, the less unpicking there is later — a readiness check now beats a scramble after an incident, an insurer's visit, or a supplier's audit.

A slip, trip or fall on the floor

Wet entrances, spillages, trailing cables and cluttered stockrooms. Slips and trips are the most common cause of major injury in retail, and one claim brings your records under scrutiny.

A lone worker or a late shift

Someone opening up, cashing up or locking up alone, or a small store run single-handed. Lone-working arrangements are expected, and it's easy to assume they're covered when they aren't.

Violence and aggression to staff

Abuse, threats and physical aggression at the till or the door are a rising risk in retail, and you have a duty to protect staff from it, not just react after the fact.

A seasonal surge in headcount

Peak trading doubles your team with temporary and seasonal staff who still need contracts, induction and safe systems, fast, without cutting corners that come back to bite.

A store transfer or acquisition

Taking on a store, or moving one between operators, brings TUPE and a new site's compliance history you now have to bring up to your standard.

WHAT WE COVER FOR RETAIL

One supplier, one set of paperwork that holds across every store.

The point of a single supplier is that the shop-floor risk assessments, the H&S records, the HR contracts and any ISO evidence reference the same standards in every store, instead of each site doing its own thing and only the gaps showing when something happens.

01Retail health & safety

Shop-floor and stockroom risk assessments, slips-and-trips controls, workplace transport in delivery yards, lone-working arrangements, violence-and-aggression risk assessment, fire risk assessment for stores and centres, COSHH for cleaning substances, and manual handling. Your named consultant acts as your competent person, so the legal duty sits with someone qualified.

02Retail HR

Contracts for permanent, part-time, temporary and seasonal staff, fast onboarding for peak trading, absence and conduct handled properly, and TUPE when a store transfers between operators. The employment side of a fluctuating, multi-site workforce, done so a dismissal doesn't become a tribunal.

03ISO for supplier requirements

Larger customers, landlords and supply chains increasingly ask retailers and suppliers for ISO 9001 (quality), 14001 (environmental) or 45001 (occupational H&S). We run each from gap analysis through to certification and surveillance, not just the gap analysis, so you meet the requirement and keep it.

04Multi-site audits, before the insurer's

Audits that stress-test every store against current law, find the gaps and tell you how to close them, before an insurer, landlord or HSE inspector does. Consistent standards across the estate, and RIDDOR-reportable incidents investigated and recorded properly.

QUESTIONS

Retail compliance questions

What are the main health and safety risks in a retail store?
The most common are slips, trips and falls, from wet entrances, spillages, trailing cables and cluttered stockrooms, which are the leading cause of major injury in retail. Add manual handling of stock and deliveries, workplace transport in delivery yards, working at height when stacking, fire safety, lone working, and violence and aggression to staff, and you have the core risk profile. We assess each against current law and give you controls you can actually apply on a busy shop floor.
Do we need to protect staff from abusive or aggressive customers?
Yes. You have a duty to protect employees from foreseeable risks to their health and safety, and that includes violence and aggression from customers or the public, which is a rising problem in retail. In practice that means a risk assessment covering flashpoints such as tills, refusals and closing time, plus controls like training, procedures, panic alarms where appropriate and a way to report and record incidents. We help you put those arrangements in place so staff are protected and you can show you took it seriously.
How do we cover lone workers in a small store?
Lone working isn't banned, but it must be assessed and controlled. Someone opening up, cashing up or locking up alone, or running a small store single-handed, faces particular risks around aggression, accidents with no one to help, and cash handling. We assess the specific risks in your setting and put arrangements in place, from check-in procedures and communication to cash-handling controls and, where needed, restricting which tasks are done alone.
Can you keep our health and safety consistent across multiple stores?
Yes, and it's one of the main reasons multi-site retailers come to us. Left to themselves, stores drift: different standards, different paperwork, gaps that only show when something happens. We put one system, one set of documentation and one named competent person across the whole estate, with audits that check every site meets the same standard. You get consistency without needing a full-time safety team in-house.
How do you handle seasonal and temporary staff?
Peak trading often doubles a retailer's headcount overnight, and temporary and seasonal staff still need proper contracts, induction, training and safe systems of work, done quickly but not carelessly. We set up compliant contracts and fast onboarding so you can scale up for peak without cutting the corners that lead to accidents or employment claims, then scale back down cleanly afterwards.
What happens to staff when we take on or transfer a store?
Taking on a store, or moving one between operators, usually triggers TUPE: the staff assigned to it transfer with their existing terms protected, and there are consultation and information duties on both sides. Get it wrong and you're exposed to claims. We guide you through the process and, at the same time, bring the new store's health and safety up to the standard of the rest of your estate, so you're not inheriting hidden gaps.
A supplier or landlord is asking us for ISO. Do we need it?
It depends who's asking and why. Larger customers, supply chains and some landlords ask retailers and suppliers for ISO 9001, 14001 or 45001 as a condition of doing business. It isn't a legal requirement, but if a key customer needs it, you effectively do. The three share a common structure, so we can build an integrated system rather than three separate ones, and take it from gap analysis through to certification and surveillance.
We're a single store, not a chain. Can you still help?
Yes. Plenty of our retail work is with single stores and small independents where the owner or manager is carrying health and safety and HR on top of running the shop. We provide specialist competent-person cover at a price that suits a smaller business, so you get a dedicated adviser's depth without employing one. We're based in Altrincham and support retailers nationwide.
